Intertek achieves ABS certification to conduct class surveys using drones in Brazil

Certification reinforces innovation, enhanced safety, precision, and efficiency during asset inspections
São Paulo, Brazil: Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has been formally certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to conduct Brazil-based class surveys in the maritime and offshore, oil and gas, power generation and industrial infrastructure sectors.
For companies in heavy industries, drones are a key technology used to ensure assets operate safely and efficiently. This specialised equipment is utilised for a wide variety of technical services on assets such as cooling towers, flare stacks, storage tanks, and much more. Drones are especially useful in high elevations and confined spaces where there are increased risks to personnel safety.
To achieve certification, Intertek proved technical excellence and strict compliance with ABS requirements. This included, but was not limited to, ensuring the competence of the Intertek Moody Brazil technical team, demonstrating the reliability of state-of-the-art equipment, and validating that organisational and documentation structure is in line with ISO/IEC 17020 and international inspection standards.
Intertek’s certification encompasses four categories as an ABS-recognised Service Supplier: Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), Hull Gauging, Enhanced Survey Program (ESP) thickness measurement for hull gauging, and Remote Inspection Techniques (RIT). Technologies applied include drones with high-resolution cameras and ultrasonic probes, magnetic crawlers, robotic systems for confined spaces, and advanced NDT tools with digital data capture.
