The 16 CFR 1610 flammability test, established by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is a mandatory requirement for selling apparel textiles in the United States. Ensure product safety and smooth entry into the U.S. market by conducting this test early in your process at one of our expert laboratories.
The 16 CFR 1610 standard applies to adult apparel textiles and garments, as well as children’s daytime clothing marketed in the United States. Its purpose is to reduce the risk of fire, injury, and death by protecting consumers from clothing made with highly flammable fabrics.
Manufacturers, importers, and retailers are required to test apparel textiles to demonstrate compliance with the flammability requirements of 16 CFR 1610 before marketing them in the United States. This standard defines a standardised test method and classifies textiles into three flammability categories based on their burn rate. Class 3 textiles, considered dangerously flammable due to their rapid and intense burning, are prohibited for use in clothing sold in the U.S.
